SIS adjustment ?
I've just replaced my Deore brake and shifter combined controls for seperate Deore shifter pods.
I stuck with Deore as I had no problems with them in the first place, they are very cheap, and I'm waiting to see what I'll get in the future either XT/XTR's new dual brake and shifter controls with XT disc brake's or stick with seperate brake and shift levers using either Hope mini mono disc's with either SRAM or Shimano shifter pods. Its the first time I've replaced just the shifter pods, I have replaced a complete rear mech and pod B4, and I'm finding it very difficult to get them set-up sweetly like they was b4 I started changing things :( I seem'd to get things working very well at first but I guess the new cable's stretched and it has thrown everything out of kilter, basically things like the front mech as I shift it into the big ring the lever get very very stiff (cable to tight?) and the rear is giving me no end of nightmare's. I Is there an easy way for me to reset things and start from scratch? I have got the procedure preety much sus'd. I read the Shimano instructions also looked at the Barnetts manual (very usefull!) I also got a Haynes manual on bike mechanics, but these manuals often have slightly conflicting ways of doing the adjustment. I'm about to have another crack at getting things right. But if anyone can give me some advice that they think will help I'd really appreciate it, as its really really annoying me now. I might just have to pay for it to get done but I'd rather do it myself. Evo |
Go here: http://www.parktool.com/repair_help/FAQrindx.shtml for very detailed info on rear dérailleur set-up and adjustment, and here: http://www.parktool.com/repair_help/...railleur.shtml for set-up and adjustment of the front dérailleur.
It is very important that you follow these instructions completely, and IN ORDER to get the job done correctly, because all of the adjustments work together and affect each other. It would be good to print these pages so you can have the instructions handy. The Park Tool repair help web-site is a very valuable source of information. |
Go back to the default settings.
The mistake most guys make is that they don't want to go back to the very beginning. As a result, they tend to pile one misadjustment onto another until the whole thing is hopelessly fubared. Try this front derailleur example:
1. Disconnect the shift cable from the derailleur. (important) 2. Adjust the position of the derailleur on the seatpost. 3. Set the low gear limit screw. 4. Shift into your lowest gear position, reattach the shift cable, and set the cable tension. 5. Adjust the high gear limit screw. |
Thanks a lot Davet & Retro grouch. Yes your right about the mistake most guys (well errr me at least) make, Since I was only changing shifters I'd thought it would be easy as the mechs Hi & Lo were already set etc... How wrong I was.
One thing though you say "set the cable tension"? o.k how? :) sorry being pedantic, the Shimano instructions say take out any slack I did that but then this made shifting into the top gear very very stiff! and I worry that it may damage the shifter pods, so I put some slack back in through the barrell adjustment. But that did'nt help much. Anyway enuff said I'll read through the Park tool link, see what I can learn from that, and I'll start from scratch and see if I can get it right this time. By the time I get it right I'll be a pro (I hope) at SIS adjustment. Evo |
