offroad tires on roadbike

I have a roadbike I want to use for light offroading --pea gravel/fire roads, dirt trails, etc. and would like to know what type of tires I need to get and what width. My rim size is 700 x23. How wide of tire can (and should) I get? I would like something with some tread and maybe very small knobbies---but not too large so that I can't still ride on pavement.

Thanks in advance.

There are lots of nice cyclocross tires that'd work for that. Question is, will they fit in your frame? Frame clearance rather than rim size is your main concern.

Yep, and brake clearance. Measure it all up and see what you can find.

I have a Specialized Tricross - it's basically a rode bike with hybrid tires. It has 700x32c's on it. The thing that I see that is different about my bike and the rode bikes I see are the brakes. My brakes have a lot more clearance.. I think they are "v-style" or something. I'd like to go down to a 28 maybe.
