How to remove headbadge?
I've stripped all the parts off my bike in preparation for a new powder coating but I see that the headbadge is still glued on. I'm not sure if I want to replace it after the work is done but I'd at least like to have the option: How can I remove the thing without ruining it?
Also, I know I need to protect the threads for the bottom bracket but what about all the other threaded spots like the derailleur hanger, threaded braze-ons and water bottle screw-in places? If those do need to be covered what's a good method? I'm paying to have the powder coat done but I don't know how much of this type of protective measure is included in the price (guess I could ask, huh?) so I'd just like to make sure it gets done right--by me if necessary. |
Mask the head badge. Once off if removable, if glued it will be hard to replace. Roll of paper will take care of
the threads. Just take a sheet an inch wider than the BB and say 2x as long as the diameter, gently roll it into a tube and put it into the BB, let it expand. (Depends partly on the bake temperature of the paint what kind of paper you use). Threads are basically self cleaning on reassembly unless the painter puts a really thick coat on. Alternative on the threads is to get a few 5mm screws and partly screw them into the threads. Or use the screws you have and they will be color coordinated. Steve |
You could try heating it gently with a heat gun to see if it softens the glue enough for it to be removed.
A trick that works with car badges is to use a thin thread cotton/fishing line/dental floss etc. behind the badge to "cut" through the glue. |
Got it off!
Well, I remembered hearing about the dental floss method a while ago so I was preparing to go that way when I noticed that the headbadge wasn't really stuck too well to begin with. I grabbed a screwdriver and carefully pried it off in less than a minute.
Thanks for the advice, all, and I especially liked the idea of putting 5mm screws in all the little spots where they will go anyway. I just got back from dropping the frame at the powder coater's place. Unfortunately, none of his stock colors appealed to me enough so I let myself drop an extra $70 to go with a special order color. The bike's 10 years old and I rationalized the extra expense by telling myself that 70 bucks spread over another ten years is cheap! Seems like I have quite a few purchases that I made using the same line of thinking... |
