Missing Rear Derailer.

Hey guys,

Well I maniged to salvige a Schwinn Traveler from the depths of hell(My old shed). And it's missing the rear derailer. It's other derailer and parts alike are "Suntour". I would like to keep with the original style of the bike and use a "Suntour" rear derailer but I don't know if they still make them anymore or where to find them other then ebay and my old computer doesn't work well with ebay. Any in sight? Or should I replace every thing including brakes cranks and all that good stuff this will be my first project bike and I wanna do this right. Also should I just use the frame and get new everything? I'm really clueless on where to start with this so any help would be awesome. Also thanks for taking the time to help a new guy out hopfuly I will be doing the same with new-comers.

Post an ISO/WTB in that thread in C&V. Suntour's been out of business awhile, but the parts are still around.

It might be a bit difficult to find the proper SunTour in decent shape. If you DON'T get the "proper" one, what's the point?
You can throw on a cheap Shimano and ride, while you look for your SunTour. It may take a while.

Why not update the bike with modern parts? U gonna put it in a glass case or ride it?

It doesn't have to be the super-modern carbon fiber, lots of "steels" out there that from a distance, u can't really tell. And some old parts are actually not cheap, if budget is what yer thinking about.

+1 And it is not a bike worth spending much on. It is good to know you want to get it riding again, though, but I wouldn't really worry about whether or not the parts group matches if I were you. Do like Bill suggested, and just roll

That's what I was planning on doing just riding it to and from work. I did happen to find an other no name schwinn in my shed that has a rear derailleur that just says Schwinn aproved with GT 510 but I don't know if it will fit cause it's on a 7 speed and the traveler is 8. Will that work?
