Bontrager carbon fork question

I have a 2004 Trek 2200 with a carbon fork.
Do you know if the Steerer is aluminum or is the entire piece carbon?

Thanks

Rob

Remove the top cap and look inside the steerer tube. If it's black, it's carbon, if it's shiny, it's aluminum.

Seriously, a carbon steerer won't (or shouldn't) have a starnut in it, it should have a compression plug or a glued in plug. A metal steerer will have a regular starnut.

I'm guessing it's aluminum- Trek doesn't do carbon until you get to the Race XXX Lite fork, which the 2200 won't have.

Thanks,
I was trying to avoid taking it apart.

I am trying to avoid getting a bike with a full carbon fork as I am a bit of a
hi-torque style rider. hate to put too much stress at that point.

Relax, after tightening the stem bolts all the top cap does is keep water out. You can remove and replace at will.
