If they screw on they'll work. Fitting through openings in dust sheilds or under the rubber covers of the MTB dust shields is way more fussy a matter than bearing support.
Cup and cone bearings are pretty simple and extremely tolerant of size and shape variations within reason. Basically if they look at all close the bearing balls won't care. It's the other stuff around the cone that'll catch you up.

No need to discuss at all. The shimano technical documentation website have compatibility table for each major component.

help me out a little here (link?). i dug for about an hour through their site before coming here but found nothing so explicit as a compatibility table.
