Rear cassette question

Is it possible to run a 8 speed rear cassette on my bike that is desgined for a 10 speed? Just bought a trainer and would like to keep a wheel specifically for trainer use because of the tyre i will be using. I have spare wheel that originally had a 8 speed cassette and would like to use this instead of having to buy again. Another option could be, put 10 speed on that wheel, but would it fit? Any info greatly appreciated. Thanks

Yes, you can fit the wheel just fine. You will have trouble shifting though. A 10 speed cassette should fit fine on your wheel as well, just buy a super cheap cassette if you want to shift and such.

Would rather go with a 10 speed on my old wheel because i would have full range of gears, and don't want to screw with my rear mech on my pretty new Madone. I'll try and get real cheap 10 speed and try that then. Thanks
