Difficulty removing a cantilever brake cable stop from steerer

Hi ,

I am trying to service the headset of an older threaded steerer bike . I can remove the top lock nut but I cannot get the canti cable stop part to come up off the tube . Will not budge . have tried tapping it with a hammer lighty , no luck . Is this part usually threaded on or does it sit on like a spacer ? Any ideas? Could it be seized ?

I ain't no bike mechanic, but that sure looks like a hex nut on top of your bracket.

I'll assume you really removed the top lock nut before attempting to remove the hanger despite what your picture shows.

They always just slip-on, like a spacer, in my experience. Is it aluminum? If so it might be corroded in place like a seatpost or quill stem. Try penetrating oil and gentle tapping to break the bond.

If the hanger has a tang on the back to keep it from turning while the locknut is tightened, it is very possible that it got knocked slightly out of the groove in the fork. Take a close look, and if that is the case, a pair of 'channel lock' pliers can be used to twist it gently back into the groove, where it should slide off with no issues.

Your Photo shows a steel Nut remaining on top of the aluminum cable hanger , which in turn sits on top of the headset adjustable top cup.

Did you buy a Proper 32mm headset wrench? , you should. Now.

then get a thinner cable hanger and replace that one, its excessively thick for the length of fork steerer you have available..

Simply removing the lock washer that's below the hanger (the thin band of chrome just above the threaded race) will be very close to the amount of space between the top lock nut's lip underside and the top of the steerer.

I agree that either the hanger's anti rotation tab has gotten rotated out of the steerer's tab groove or it's corroded in place. Either way more force is the likely answer.

There is almost always a notch on the cable stop that fits into the slot on the head tube. Make sure the cable stop is pointing STRAIGHT FORWARD so that they line up. Grab the front of the cable stop with vise grips and wiggle it up and down. It should work loose. If no dice, try carefully loosening the top cup so that it starts to put upward pressure on the cable stop. If still no dice then unless you want to take a chance on ruining the head tube threads, you might want to take it to a shop for them to remove it.
