Campy 8 speed
 

Does anyone know a sorce for Campy 8 speed stuff? Shimano still sells 8 speed cassettes, but I can't seem to find any Campy. With a little filing will a Shimano work?

Check with SheldonBrown.com. Also, I have heard of another European brand which is Campy-compatible, and you can always use 7-speed cogs in an 8-speed system.

Branford Bike is another good choice. I find their prices good and their service excellent.

No, to make a shimano work, it would take much more than filing.

First, you need a new hub. Shimano cassettes aren't compatible with campy hubs. As well the cogs are the wrong spacing for campy derailleurs so you would need to change them which involves messing around with pop rivets etc.

It is possible to work in a shimano hub, but it will be so much work, you may as well change the whole drivetrain.

I would do my best to try to find a campy cassette.

I know that there are freewheel mechanisms available for using campy cogs on a shimano hub, but I haven't heard of it working the other way. Those conversions aren't cheap, either.

Try these people - they have normally got stocks of Avanti stuff.

Forget the Shimano cassette, you could work on it for weeks and still not get it to work.

It's mainly because when they retool to the new product lines -- 9sp and 10sp -- they actually have to cease production of some intems to make way for production of new items. Manufacturing capacity is limited, so they have to make choices.

I switched from Campy (8) to Marchisio when 28tooth cogs became hsrd to find. An added advantage is that I can replace the cogs individually, since the big ones seem to wear more with me.
With Marchisio, you can change the spacers to get the cogs to work with any indexing system, eg Shimano mech and changers with a Campy hub. This is not so crazy, if you want a really long rear mech and maybe bar-end shifters.
