What tire can fit my rims? (Fuji Absolute)

Hello,

I am planning on biking the C&O towpath from cumberland to DC. My question is simply how big of a tire can I safely fit on my bike for a more comfortable ride on the gravel?

My bike is a fuji absolute. This model to be exact:

https://www.fujibikes.com/2005/bikes.asp?id=27#

I have the original rims (Axelrims r500):

Currently the tires are 700x26c.

Any advice would be great!

Thanks,
Jack

From the sheldon brown site max would be a 25-28. According to the sheldon brown rim width/tire size table here. Note that he says it may err on the side of caution. So 28c?

i have that same bike but the 2007 model. looks like the rims are still the same. i rode on the C & O with it just a few months ago. i was able to install 35mm victoria radonneur pro's which actually measured to be 32mm. Even with those tires, the ride was jarring at least at the DC end of things. i hope you can test out your bike on the towpath for a few miles to see if its okay with you.
