Front derailleur problem

I am working on a bike and the front derailleur will go up to the middle and large chainwheel fine but snaps right back when shifter is released. I think I have the cable taught enough when on the smallest ring. Any ideas, thanks

This sounds like too much cable tension.

Or it could be a problem with the latching mechanism in the shifter if it is supposed to be indexed. If a friction shifter - maybe the shifter tension adjustment.
