Having a weird self shifting action on the rear
on road regular pace just all of a sudden it will just start jumping up one down one then after a few it will do it again. Seems to happen even when just barely pedaling .

you need to adjust the rear dérailleur cable turn the adjustment barrel 1/4 at a time until things settle back down again.

Bikeman is probably correct, but if the shift cable adjustment doesn't fix the problem you may have a bent derailleur hanger.

turned and tested
I took your advise and tested it for a couple blocks and it felt a lot better still just a little bit of chatter but I could kick hard without any slipping and virtually no noise other than that little chatter. Thanx a lot this why I will be on these forums for a long time to come you really know your stuff

Ride home test
My ride home produced winning results from the adjustment that you recommended . Not one off shift , though the chain is not quite centered on cassette so that is where my chatter is coming from had the usual 4 miles to test it. There are 2 adjustment screws one has an H next to it . How can I find out what each ones job is ? When I made the adjustment I turned them both to the left that 1/4 turn like you said ...

The two screws are the high and low limit sets for the rear derailleur. You shouldn't have to mess with those unless your chain is falling off the top or bottom sprocket or your getting some clak in your biggest or smallest sprocket. Cable slack is the problem you were identifying. Thats is remedied with the barrell adjuster which is a tiny knob right were the cable enters the derailleur. Turn it a quarter to a half a turn counter clockwise to take the slack out and hopefully make everything stop chattering and jumping around.

I had the same problem and it was a worn chain and rear cluster. Replacing both fixed it.
