Homemade stopper on brake cable

Hi There,

I need to fashion a small stopper-type thing on the end of a brake cable so that it doesn't get pulled through a small hole. I'm not sure whether or not I could dab a ball of solder on the end, or maybe some superglue. It has to be able to widstand a little bit of tension, but not a huge amount.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
-e

Let me just clarify a bit you have a section of brake cable with no ends/anchor on it and want to solder a ball on the end to use as an anchor so that it stays in the lever correctly. I'd say that is a very bad idea. Nothing you solder will likely be able to withstand the force the lever puts on it for hard braking. It's just not worth your life for a $3 cable. Go to the LBS and buy a new one with the proper end either road (round) or mountain (hammer shaped).

I can't help but think that you're making a lot of assumptions about the OP's intended use. Assuming that s/he is NOT intending to use the brake cable to operate the brake, I would think that a bead of solder on the end would be perfect. You could even tie the cable in a knot and then solder the knot.

You can solder a short piece of brass tubing to a piece of brake cable. That's how I made the bridge wire for this old Mafac centerpull. That's my daughter's bike, so you know I'm confident that it won't fail.
