change handle bars to tour style instead of hybrid
 

I have an insight 1 hybrid bike. I would like to change the handlebars to a touring style bars. I know i need to change the shifters and brakes to do so. unless there is a handlebar that will work with my shifters. Any ideas please reply. David

Not sure I know what you mean by a touring style bar. Google "butterfly bar" or "Trekker bar," and see if that's what you mean. If so, I really don't think you need different shifters or brakes. I didn't need them when I put trekkers on my wife's bike.

Trekking bars will give you more hand positions, and can usually use the same shifters and brakes as a flat bar.

ok i went to bgi in greenwood indiana and they mentioned the handle bars are wider and thew shifters that are on a straight bar won't work on the curve handlebars. David

I switched my handlebars on my Giant Suede hybrid (7 speed) that had riser bars with almost no sweep to tourist style handlebars (North Road style) from an old Schwinn bike (a Breeze I think).

My brakes fit fine, along with the grip shift. I also have a computer, a bell and a light mounted. Things are tight but all fit okay. Love the comfort and swept back angle that make my wrists and hands feel relaxed and not hurting or sore like before the switch. What's nice is that these bars have some rise too so I didn't have to change other things.

yes rosie i believe it will be a better change over all. Must need to find which handlebar will work with my brakes and gear shift. The shaft width is narrow compared to th north road style. tomorrow i will be going on a 43 mile tour to columbus indiana from greenwood indiana. It will be my 1st tour and am interested an seeing how it will turn out. Figure to ride around 17 to 22 miles an hour. Dave. Oh ps for me to change everything over will cost around 250.00 handlebar brakes gear shift as well. plus 45.00 labor

What you're talking about is "drop bars".

There's some other options that will offer you better or more hand positions yet will still fit the MTB levers and shifters. Soma has a few such as their Sparrow bars. Velo Orange is another. At least one company makes a mountain sized moustache bar but I have no idea where to find it but references to this unique critter have shown up in threads here at BF. And I'm sure there's more.

So as a touring bar, you think he means something like a Nitto Randonneur or Noodle?

ok well after much research i have decided to put the new bike up for sell. you can view it in craigslist indianapolis indiana or i will trade it for a road bike. Would like to trade it nothing wrong with used bikes lol

ok well i went with what yen syggested too the trekker bar. Can't lose its only 23.00 includes shipping. Looks like something i can work with. Bottom line is comfort and speed and i am not sure i am getting it out of my hybrid insight1. David
