front derailleur problem

Hi there, first time poster on this site.

I've build a couple of mountain bikes from scratch, no problem so know the ins and outs of MTB set up.

My girlfriend recently got a road bike –*a Claud Butler San Remo 08. It came in bits so I had to put it together. Most of it has been fine but when it came to the front derailleur I have been a bit stumped: There are two front chainrings, but the front shifter and derailleur have 3 positions. I've done a bit of research and (as you'll know) you can get double and triple derailleurs. My question is this: why would there be a double chainring with a triple derailleur?

I've tried to set it up and it's a ***** to sort out –*the largest chainring is fine with all the back cassette sprockets, but I can't get it to sit in one position on the smaller chainring. Effectively, you have 2 positions for the smaller chainring to avoid it clattering against the cage.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Can it be set up in a proper way or is it worth getting a double derailleur?

It would help a bit if you'd identify the parts involved. Some comments:

1) Dérailleurs don't have have 'positions'. All the indexing is in the shifters. So don't assume that the FD is for a triple. Check the part number.

2) Some Shimano shifters work for both doubles and triples. No discrepancy.

3) See the READ THIS sticky at the top of the forum page for pointers to web sites that describe setup procedures. For the FD do the whole procedure from scratch.
