Ultegra shifters and XT rear derailleur incompatibility?

So I go to the shop today to pick up my spanky new touring bike only to find that they had not realized that apparently Ultegra STI shifters and XT rapidrise derailleurs don't like each other.

They're going to put an LX derailleur on there for the time being, but one of the Techs mentioned there may be a non-rapidrise flavour of the XT derailleur and that would solve the problem.

Can anyone enlighten me? Has anyone come across this problem before?

Thanks for any help.

Bikes: '''96 Litespeed Catalyst, '05 Litespeed Firenze, '06 Litespeed Tuscany, '12 Surly Pacer, All are 3x8,9 or 10. It is hilly around here!

The Rapid Rise rear derailleurs should work with Ultegra STI brifters but would work in the opposite direction from "normal", i.e. the inner lever would downshift the cassette and the main brake lever would upshift it.

AFAIK, Shimano makes a "high normal" version of every Rapid Rise model so a normal XT will work fine.

im with hillrider, xt and ultegra should work fine together. The shifting would just work backwards

Thanks Hillrider. I've searched using "high normal" and now see what you mean. You answered a simolar question for someone else in '06.

As already said, there's no compatiblilty problem except the Rapid Rise derailleur will make the shifters work oppositely than they would with a conventional derailleur. XT rear derailleurs are readily available in either Rapid Rise or conventional configurations-
