Campy Cranks?

My cross bike has Dura Ace 9 speed that I have been running as 1x9. After Sundays race I got the idea to switch to a compact crankset to get a few easier gears for those steep climbs (I am getting older and larger Can I use the Campy 10speed Centaur compact cranks that I have already? I know that I must use the campy bb to match, but I wondered about a shimano chain on campy rings.

Works fine. In fact, recent Campagnolo 10 speed chains are the same width as Shimano chains (5.9mm irc). If you are running 9 speed, you could run any makers 9 speed chain. You can run as low as a 38t on your existing crank. If you run a single 34t ring, you might not have enough top end for some courses.. using both rings might work better. Some Campagnolo compacts have an oddball bcd that necessitates TA or Stronglight replacement rings of the correct kind.

I think all Campy compact with carbon crank arms have the odd BCD (at least some do - Record for sure). TA model that fits (without alteration) the oddball BCD is TA Nerius. Stonglight CT 2 rings can be found in a Campy special size ("regular" CT 2's do not fit). Some guys dremel out the hole on regular chainrings to fit. Campy did this to ---- sell more Campy stuff?

The Campy CT cranks, down through at least Centaur, use the single off-set bolt to try to assure you buy Campy chainrings. However, this has the unwanted side effect of making sure no one buys Campy rings for use on a Shimano or SRAM crank.

The fact that TA and Stronglight make compatible rings spoiled their exclusivity but they did try.

Thanks all. I will try the crankset. I do have the cranks w/rings and will use both chainrings as a 2x9. A little more low end and high end.
