Is my fork broken? (Pic)
1 Attachment(s)
The fork is off of an old schwinn world sport. In the red circle, what used to be a weld is now cracked from the blade all the way to the steerer tube. It feels good but Im just wondering if it actually dangerous to ride on it.

Pull and push on the leg. If you see the line moving it's a crack. And cracks have a way of growing and ending your day in a grand fashion. If it's really cracked I'd say it's toast.
You could try to have it brazed or welded to fix it but beware that welding will distort the fork and the heat of welding will melt the brazing that is holding the fork together or at the ver least the brazing will contaminate the weld. |
The photo is too blurry to tell but it looks like I can see daylght right through the crack! Do what you want but personally, I would throw that fork into the recycle bin just as fast as I could get it there. I've noticed cracks like this only get worse, they never get better.

The photo looks like a blurry UFO picture, but I agree with the posters above. Yank on the fork by hand in all different directions - if you can see movement in the area of the suspected crack, junk the fork NOW before it introduces your face to the road.

Agreed. If you have to ask - don't ride it.

Clicking on the picture reveals a blurrier zoom of the original - lol.

I think I can see Bigfoot!
(that is, there's probably a "macro" setting on your camera for such photos. The icon look like a flower.) http://photonotes.org/dictionary/images/macro.gif |
Looks like a normal fork crown seam.....
