cant get derailer to do full range

I put together a bike and am using a shimano SRAM rear derailer for an 8 speed cassette. I am using a shimano ultegra bar end shifter.

I can't get the derailer to do the full range, maybe only 6 of the 8 sprockets. And no it's not because I have the high and low governor screws tightened down too much or something stupid like that.

Does this derailer not work with the bar end shifter I am using?

I built the frame this stuff is on. I believe the hanger alignment could potentially be an issue, but things look nice and straight with the derailer on.

With the cable unclamped at the derailleur, is the barend shifter lever capable of moving it's entire range??? If not then, you probably assembled the shifter with the "innards" of the shifter in a gear position other than low gear. That's why the instructions tell you to shift the "innards" to low gear BEFORE demounting it from the barend mount.

With the shifter in indexed mode ... there might be shift incompatibilites between SRAM and Shimano can't say for sure. In friction mode, you should be able use the shifter with just about anything.

That ended up being the problem with my shifter, but what instructions? When I ordered bike it didn't come with anything except reciept. I wish it would of came with instructions for every part on it.

A SRAM derailleur is made to move 1mm for each mm of cable pulled while a Shimano derailleur is made to move 2mm for every mm of cable pulled.

Shimano shifters work with Shimano derailleurs;
SRAM 2:1 shifters work with Shimano derailleurs;
SRAM shifters work with SRAM derailleurs.
