bar end shifter for internal hub

building a bike with a shimano three speed hub, and I realy hate the way the shifter fits on drop bars. thinking about using a bar end or a thumb shifter instead. I know how to set the tension on the cable so it will work, but has this been done by anyone? I saw it on a bike with an aw three speed once, but did not ride it.
any thoughts?

Check Sheldon, he came up with a couple of cool mounting options.

owning currently 6 3speeds and a half dozen more over the years, i hope i can help on this. i have both s.a. equipt bikes and shimano 333 equipt bikes. if it is a 333, there are indexing clicks in the shifter that precisously get the gear into position. with thumb shifter or bar ends, is that if you are using indexing, will it match that of the 3 speed hub? and if they are friction and you plan to shift by feel, that may cause excessive wear in your hub. i have seen that 3 speed shift throws are fast and precious. it may "work", but unless you indexing clicks are matched to the 3speed hub, it won't be right. 333, nexus or what?
