Quick release skewers.

Hi there,

This could be a stupid question, but is it possible (and easy) to change my current skewers (with a normal nut) to quick release ones ??

Yes, it is possible and easy. Just buy the new skewers and replace the old ones with them. When removing the old skewers pay attention to the two little springs they have (so that you get the new springs in the same way).

Excellent news.

Thank you.

Wait a minute. Is your current wheel nutted or does it already have a hollow axle and uses a skewer but not a QR type? If the axle is nutted and solid, you will have to change the axle to be able to use a QR.

I think that "with a normal nut" means that he has nutted axles.

That's why I asked.

Because you knew the answer?

As I understand it, a nutted axel is solid. In order to use a quick release, the solid axel must replaced with a hollow one.

nuts.

You could take the hub apart and see if you can find a hollow axle to replace the solid one. And then you could use a skewer with it.

Not for certain. There are skewers that go through hollow axles but fasten with an allen wrench as a theft-preventative measure. It was possible, but not likely, that's what the OP had so I wanted to be sure.

Do you have picture?

Most likely you have to replace the axle on the hub with a hollow one to use QR skewers. Not that tough. About $10 for hollow-axles and about 10-15 minutes on each wheel to replace.

OK, hasty advice on my part. Thanks for pointing out the axle issue.

Assuming the OP has all the tools to do this already. Nutted axles usually come on cheap-tacular wheels. Not even worth the labour or parts cost to do this, frequently.
