broken Mavic askium spoke

does anyone know where i can order / purchase some bladed spokes for my askium wheel... the LBs guys want to order me one but they say it could take a couple weeks.. .. I gotta ride.. soon.. .. its this because askium wheels are sort of an OEM part? and the shops dont want to service what they dont sell. I know there are a bunch of people riding askium wheels because they come on a lot of bikes.. i

MAVIC is famous for difficult service (hey, they're French). Nothing direct; everything has to go through a dealer.

Some things, like bearings, can be sourced elsewhere but the spokes are proprietary and must come from the factory.

I don't know if your model has the straight-pull heads but if not your shop might be able to put in a few "normal" spokes to get you going until the replacements arrive.

Or, it might be time for a wheel upgrade!

Call around to a few other LBSs. Most shops have a Mavic repair kit that includes parts for their various wheels.

wow i really cant believe this.. ....a spoke.. ... .. i have been to the three biggest shops in this area and none of them have one of these spokes.. they have to order them.. the thing is there are bikes hanging all over the shops with Mavic askium wheels with bladed spokes.. and they seem amazed that someone would need a spoke???.. i really want to upgrade my wheels anyway but i had no idea this was going to be such a pain in the ass.. i am ssort of old school and i rode bikes back in the day when a 700 wheel all had the same spoke.. and you just went and got some and whoooeee your back riding..

This must be why I buy spare spokes along with each new wheelset ...
But back to the Problem:
Sapim makes straight spokes too: they are round and doesn´t look like the Aksium spokes even from 10m away, but provided you can get one of the right length it could be a temporary solution till you get the original one.

absolutely frustrating and totally not right----- bicycles should not be jewelry---
I have had trouble in the past finding bladed spokes-- correct sizes---- for various builds with Alex and newer Mavic--- I have thus crossed all this crap off my list and will from now on build with
db round and velocity stuff and old stock.....this is insulting to me as a buyer... kinda like the government that does not trust me with my own money......

thanks

i dont know about the gvment with my own mony tyhink but i am also tossing this mavic crap.. and all this new hola.. and going with tools not jewels.. ... .. .. i think that Mavic should come out with a carbon wheel that has each spoke a different lenght (by about .0001 mm).. and then make sure every fourth one is left threaded.. and the unobtainium nipples will be hidden in a horses ass.. at the zoo.. but you have to pick the right horse. zebras count..

HEY!! your in knoxville, just noticed that. Whats your name, i actually work in one of the local shops (harpers) and was wondering if ive ever seen ya.

Anyways, i am not a fan of that proprietry crap myself, they are great for race wheels but everyday "training" wheels if you wanna call them that, 28 or 32 spoke handbuilt wheels are the way to go. Fast enough that i cant use the wheels as an excuse for being slow (not that that would EVER work anyways) and they are reliable/easily reparible.

If you go to your LBS to get a spoke replaced and they don't have it, they must order it from a distributor and that will take most of a week to get. If your shop orders spokes from Mavic it will take most of a week to get. No difference.

What I am hearing here is a lot of whining about the LBS not having every part in existance in stock. Bicycles have many hundreds of thousands (millions?) of different parts and no LBS can have them all in stock. When your bike breaks, it should not come as a shock when you have to wait a few days to get parts in. Even basic stuff like bottom brackets, headsets, hubs, rims, shifters, brake pads, and on, and on, come in many, many flavors and frequently have to be special ordered. Spoke inventory is one of the biggest headaches that a shop owner can have. You want to have a good stock of spokes to keep the fixes and new builds going, but you can easily end up with tens of thousands of dollars of spoke inventory that just sits there. Make like you're a shop owner and think about this. It's not good business to keep inventory around that does not move.

Mavic only sells through shops so as to support them. All bike riders should be happy about that. A friend just got his Mavic Kysrium SL re-rimmed and re-spoked for $130. Try getting that done for other high end wheels and see how that goes.

The more high end bicycle and high end equipment you buy, the more likely your LBS is not going to have repair parts in stock. What smart riders do is to make sure they have a back up wheel set. THAT will get you through most problems. Plus, there actually is life outside of cycling. Try reading a good book while you're waiting for your parts to arrive.

That is nonsense. Mavic normally ships next day from Massachusetts. Add UPS time and that's how long it should take. Anyone who tells you "a couple of weeks" does not know how to sit down for five minutes and place your order. If something is "not in stock" then your LBS should be able to let you know about that within one day.

This being said, a good deal of the bike industry is partying in Las Vegas this week at Interbike and there will be delays that don't normally occur (i.e. add +1 week for some things).

How could a million dollar shop-- dead serious about this--- not have anything in stock? ok , a wheelset maybe, a special der., a titanium something or other--- but a f-ing spoke? no way!!!
not right in my boook--- forget the time--- sure I'll wait--- but time is money-- and I'll be damned
you tell me its a specialty item-- I don't want a ferrarri-- I need my ride (100.00 for a chinese seat? they have plenty--- 120. for a stem? 110 for a pair of speedplay stompers?-- but you cant provide me with a simple spoke to get me on the road--- ) Did any tour dopers have to wait for their dope?
