Chain falls off when I shift to big chainring.

The title says it all. I'm planning on getting a whole new drivetrain around Christmas, but what can I do until then?

turn the upper limit screw on your front derailleur so that it doesn't go so far as to cause the chain to drop off the top, that otta do it.

That's the right approach but turn the high limit screw only a very little at a time and stop as soon as the problem is solved. A 1/4-turn at a time is PLENTY.
