10 speed crank, 10 speed compatible chain?

Looking for a new crank for the one of my bikes. It's 9 speed but all the online shops have 10 speed stuff. All cranks mention "requires 10 speed compatible chain". Does that mean it won't work with my 9 speed drivetrain?

10 speed chain will work. You need typical old-school 10-speed chain. Get it at a hardware or department store for $7.00. Don't get a modern thin chain that is carried typically at bike shops.

What on earth does that mean? There is no such thing as an "old school" 10-speed chain, and all 10-speed chains are thin as compared to 9,8,7 speed chains.

The answer is that there is 99% chance that the 9sp chain will work with no problem. There are a few possible minor issues, but in practice it doesn't seem to be a problem to run 9sp chain on 10sp cranks.

You'll be fine.

The problem arises when you want to use a 9-speed chain with a 10-speed cassette...

Thanx for the info guys! I was hoping I would get these responses. Thanx Psy, yes I am trying to avoid the 10 speed cassette!

Unless I can find a $10 10 speed crank and $15 10 speed brifters along with the 7.00 chain!
