coaster brake repair
I have a friend who have a huffy cruiser with a coaster brake than sound like it coming apart, the brake does work, but when the wheel is spinning is when the sound is heard . I have open up the hub and overhaul the system 2x and for the life of me I can not find anything wrong with it. I been twenty years in this business and have never see or hear this before without fixing it. It is a falcon hub ( do I said more ) , it is similar to a shimano unit. any ideas people ?

my 89 huffy good vibrations cruiser has the shimano version and it had a noise that rebuilding the hub seemed to helpout, allthough i suspect the tension spring inside may need to be replaced down the road. shoes in the right way? tension spring in good shape? plenty of grease? all your bearings in good shape and everything proporly tightened? bent axle? if all else fails, you can buy a basic wheelset or rear wheel with a new coaster for relativly cheap. if not proporly rebuilt, a cheap coaster brake may never be the same. sure you braking surfaces are not damaged or bad shoes? good luck.

When the wheel is spinning, a sound is heard? What kind of sound? Grinding? Squeaking? Buzzing?

sure sounds like the tension spring or forgein debris in the hub. did you closely inspect the parts of the coaster brakes b4 reinstalling? my huffy's brake was making a similar sound, making me think a spring had run amuk and the cog on the rim would kinda shudder or vibrate as the drivetrain stoped, but the wheel continued to spin. got fed up, tore it down, cleaned it up, repacked with grerase and reassembled. got rid of the problem 4 me. besides just the sound, and change in braking performance? weak, normal or waiting to lock up (like a cheap coaster brake.)
