Bontrager Select Rims

I have a Trek 1500 with Bontrager Select Rims. I noticed that on both sides of both rims there are grooves. They appear to be from the factory, are they there for channeling water away during wet conditions? Dumb question?

They are wear indicators. When you can't see the groove anymore, your rims need to be replaced.
