Cant find the right adjustable quill stem.

I got a road bike with drop handlebars.

it's threaded and the quill stem is one solid part. I want to get an adjustable one to fit me better. the stem is 1" and thats no problem to find, however my handlebar is 1" 1/4 round and all the quill stems I can find only fit 1" handlebars.

am I out of luck? or can I use the one made for 1" handlebars and just use longer bolts so i can tighten it up?

the pic below can better explain.

Short answer is NO.

The stem's clamp diameter has to match the bars. It's possible to shim a smaller bar to a larger stem, but the other direction can only be done in theoretical hyper space. You can't just use longer screws because the curve won't match, and you'll be clamping the bars by the 4 corners of the stem and clamp.

If you really want one of these stems and cannot find a 31.8 (1-1/4") version, then buy a 1" one and a 1" handlebar (which shouldn't be too pricey).

You are out of luck. Your 1-1/4" handlebar (nominally 31.8 mm) is made to work with 1-1/8" threadless stems. Threadless stems started becoming standard around 1999, and the larger diameter handlebar a couple of years later.

Adjustable quill stems are marketed to riders of older bikes and bike path hybrids, areas groups where there is no widespread demand for 31.8 mm handlebars. You are trying to mate a 21st century performance handlebar with a 1990-era recreational stem.

And please don't try to make this stem work with your handlebar. Whether your bar is made of carbon or aluminum, its thin walls are made to to work only with a precision machined 31.8 clamp that exerts even compression around the entire circumference of the bar. Any other kind of clamping "solution" will cause damage and eventual failure.

Your best bet is to find a good quality aluminum bar that matches the pattern of your current bar but fits a 25.4 mm clamp.

QBP has quill stems for 25.4 and 26.0 mm handlebars. No 31.8.

I'm with the others here if you want to use this type of stem you will need to get 25.4 or 26.0 set of bars and a stem to match. There is a large selection of 1inch quill stems bars out there for this type of setup fairly cheap.

Seems like a lot of work to change bars, you would think someone would make the part I need. the bike came with the right size but I just need it adjustable not fixed.

You could go with a converter from quill stem to threadless and then get an adjustable 31.8 stem for that.

It's a lot more work to tool up a machine shop for a product for which there is practically no demand.

Here's that adjustable 31.8 stem jsharr has in mind. https://www.excelsports.com/main.asp?...jor=1&minor=22 It's even on sale.

This is a viable solution.
