Shimano hollowtech 2 BB Compatibility

Are all the shimano hollowtech 2 BB's the same size fitting to the cranksets? I'm guessing they're just different quality materials, but not sure. Can I use an Ultegra BB with a 105 crankset? Or when it wears out, upgrade to Dura ace for the BB?
Thanks

All are compatible up and down. Ultegra <-> 105 <-> DA. DA gets you bling and
not much else. Barely detectable improvements in the bearings and grams lighter
in weight.

Mountain and road bb's are different on the HII's. You can also use other external type bearings like those from enduroforkseals.com, Phil Wood or Chris King...

Gotta love the BF

I just logged on to ask a very similiar question. I figured I would use the search function to get my answer and voila, someone else had already asked it.

Just for confirmation however, the only real difference in the Hollotech II B's is the quality of the bearings themselves? Is there really that big of difference in bearing quality?

It appears it makes the most sense to buy a 105 BB instead of the ultegra for my newly scored 6603 crankset.

I have had great luck out of Ultegra BB and not so much luck out of D/A. I have not used 105 though

Interesting point garysol1, I just ran a search on ebail and the ultegra is only three dollars more than the 105, it might make sense to match the crankset and BB if it so little a price difference.

That's what I would do. Check probikekit.com for BB good BB prices as well.

Was your experience with HollowTech II or with the previous HollowTech I/Octalink bottom brackets? The DA Octalink bb required routine maintenance and adjustment and the Ultegra version was a true sealed set-and-forget. The DA Octalink tended to be a problem if it was neglected.

To be honest I am not sure. First one came with my 7800 group as new in 2006 and the next one was purchased last year. I saw no way of adjusting or servicing either one.

7800 series is Hollowtech II. I'd bet the 105 and Ultegra bb's are the same except perhaps for finish, but believe the DA bearings are a bit better quality.

There is no such thing as a "true sealed set-and-forget" bearing.
