Tennis Elbow(s)
Any of you older-uh-seasoned mechanics gotten tennis elbow?
I don't play tennis or golf, and I've never had a problem until this season. After so many decades of turning wrenches my elbows have decided to start screaming at me. I'm doing the Advil and ice, but the 3rd professional suggestion was to take a break, which I won't do. Anyone have any good home-grown remedies? |
If you don't listen,it's going to hurt for awhile, take a break.
If you try to move your arm like your throwing a baseball, and it feels like someone is shoving a knitting needle in your funny bone, you have tennis elbow.Rest was the only way I could get it to go away. |
I bought an arm band with a velcro closure that I wrap around my upper forearm fairly tightly. It relieves my irritation and pain significantly. I bought mine at the drug store and have also seen them for sale in sporting goods stores.

Those arm bands are a standard treatment for tennis elbow. I got a case doing martial arts, and it bothered me for some time till I went to an ortho man and got some serious anti-inflammatorys and one of those bands. Mine had a little plastic "air cushion" that went over the sore spot.

"tennis elbow", taught me to flyfish, play billiards, etc, left handed... if you don't use it, it will get better... Then ,when it gets better the ability to do it left handed will keep the fly hooks out of your ears when the wind is blowing, and you don't have to use the crutch as much...

If you know or can discover which specific activity is causing the problem, then you can change that activity a bit and get some relief.
A few years ago I developed tennis elbow that I discovered was related to using a computer mouse with my arm extended. I got a mouse pad with a wrist rest and the problem went away. I also used the armband and Advil, but the real key was supporting my wrist so that the tendons were not strained. |
I'd start playing tennis if I were you. But, on second thought, you would probably get bike mechanics elbow.

I have this condition due to an accident at my workplace. Had surgery in February of this year and it still hurts like hell. I use a strap set-up, just below the right elbow, toward the hand. Also use 2 types of velcro double pad systems that wrap above and below the elbow. Ice and ibuprofen help too.

Yeah, I got those velcro arm bands with the gel pack you can put in the freezer.
Those with Advil help a bit. The season has slowed down here so I'll cut back on turning wrenches - that's the activity that is causing it - although it kills just to open the lid of a Smart Balance butter container. Yeah, maybe taking up tennis with a fly rod will help. |
