headset adapter

You guys probably saw my thread about sonverting a MTB to a cyclocross bike, but I learned that the headset is 1". First of all, how do I know if it is threaded? I saw a couple adapters on ebay that change the treadedness and diameter. How do you install these...keep in mind I'm looking for 1,2,3 instructions here, no fancy milling stuff. Thanks!

The Bianchi Campione in the attached pic has a 1" threaded headset with the steerer converter you mentioned and a 1 1/8" riser stem.

I've attached another pic that shows the bars on the same bike. Sorry, I don't have a close-up of the adaptor. I've since moved this set-up to a Cannondale I recently purchased. The adaptor works very well, I will probably convert at least one more bike using one of these.

There are several different brands, but all the same basically, as this:

This will convert your 1" to a 1-1/8th inch. They work great! I did this recently to my high-end 1982 machine.

Can you please explain how to do it? It didn't say on the website.

So the background is that you have a bike with a threaded headset and you want to use a stem for a threadless set?

If that's the case here's what you do:

1) Loosen the bolt at the top rear of your current stem a couple of turns. Give it a tap to dislodge the wedge.
2) Pull out the current stem. Lube and wiggling may be required.
3) Insert adapter of appropriate diameter, tighten the corresponding screw to the one you've previously loosened and tapped down.
4) Mount new stem of the appropriate diameters, mount new bar.
5) Do the fiddly bits with brakes, shifters, wires, casings and bar tape.
6) ride and enjoy.

First, you CANNOT change a 1" headset into a 1-1/8" headset and you CANNOT install a 1-1/8" headset, of any type, in a frame made for 1" headset.

You can keep your current 1" threaded headset and adapt it to accept a 1-1/8" threadless STEM.

Panthers007 11-11-08 01:25 PM

Correct. You won't be changing the actual headset. Just it's ability to accept 1-1/8" stems.
