A 39-year-old bicycle mechanic in Rio de Janeiro has confessed to killing 24 boys in a string of castration murders stretching back over a decade.
Brazilian prosecutors said today that Franciso das Chagas made his confession on Tuesday evening after four days of intense police questioning.
If it proves true, it would spell the end to the mystery of who was killing and castrating boys in northeastern Maranhao state at a rate of about three per year since 1991.
"These confessions are just the beginning of the investigation. There are people who have been convicted and are serving time for some of these crimes, so we will have to look carefully for corroborating evidence," Mananhao State Prosecutor Marcio Tadeu Marques, said by telephone from Sao Luiz, 2,250 kms northeast of Rio de Janeiro.
Marques said, however, the confessions were remarkable for the richness of detail and could only have come from someone who was at the crime scene or who had a morbid fascination with the crimes and had extensively investigated them.
Chagas was arrested on Friday after police uncovered the remains of two young boys buried beneath the dirt floor of his shack on the poor outskirts of Sao Luiz.
One of the bodies belonged to 4-year-old boy who was identified by scraps of clothing he was wearing when he disappeared in February 2003. Police were uncertain about the identity of the second corpse.
After initially denying everything, Chagas, over the weekend, confessed to killing 20 boys between 1991 and last year. Since Monday he confessed to four more killings.
One man, Roberto Ribeiro Cruz is already serving 19 years in prison after supposedly confessing to killing an 11-year-old boy in 1998. Two more men are awaiting trial in connection with the slaying of another child in 1996.
Nelma Pereira da Silva, coordinator for the Padre Passerini Centre for the Defence of Children and Adolescents, says police torture is a common practice in Maranhao state.
Chagas' confession, however, is powerful because police have already uncovered two bodies in his house.
And there is another suggestive coincidence.
Chagas lived in neighbouring Para state during a period in the late 1980s and early 1990s when a similar string of castration murders occurred there.
Last year, four members of an alleged satanic group were convicted in connection with those murders, which prosecutors painted as part of a black magic ritual.
The group's leader was, however, acquitted in a controversial verdict amid charges of jury rigging.
Da Silva said that her group was uncomfortable with the police characterisation of the murders as being linked to black magic.
"We don't see any connection with black magic," she said. "But the question remains, why were the victims' genitals always removed?"
