Coverting Threaded Headset to Theadless

One LBS mechanic says you can convert a threaded headset to threadless by filing off the thread of the adjustable race. Has anybody done this before?

Why would anyone want to do this. Wouldn't it be much simpler to just buy the adaptor. $20 at most.

If you just want to be able to use threadless stems buy a threaded to threadless adapter. Your LBS can order one for US$15-20 or less or you can buy one online.

I've never done that nor do I expect that I ever will.

On the surface it looks like you could grind off the threads and just clamp everything together, but then how snugly would the race fit against the steerer tube? If the fit is less than perfect I'd expect your bike handling would be less than perfect too.

Doesn't this kind of make you wonder what other short cuts this mechanic might be taking with other people's bikes?

agreed.

the adapter is the cheap and safe way to go. I wouldn't go filing on the steerer tube.

I don't think he's talking about adapting the steerer tube. He's talking about removing the threads from the inside of the upper headset race so that it will slide over the steerer. I'm not sure about this because without a uniform inside diameter, I think that a threadless steerer would flop around or, worse, would not be centered and may bind.

This just sounds like a real bad idea and best left for an emergency like stuck in Tibet with a busted headset and only threadless headsets available. Otherwise, just get the right headset.
