trailer brakes
Has anyone come across kids trailers with brakes? Have any of you made your own brake set-ups for trailers? I'd sure like to be able to slow down my bike under a full load on a steep downhill without getting pushed by my offspring. I could foresee some nasty braking scenarios when touring under a full load.

Brake early?
I know what you mean, I suppose you could use a tandem type brake lever that pulls two cables, hook the second up to your trailer, only problem, unless you have a trailer with a tube on both sides of your wheel, I see the brake mounting torquing under load and failing. (Ive given this some thought too, I've decided to brake early for the reasons above) |
The only trailer with brakes is the Cycletote, you can see it at http://www.cycletote.com/
I have had a cargo model for about 5 years. I have used it to to carry just about everything from returning cans and bottles to the store. And moving an apartment sized washer across town. The most I have ever pulled in the trailer was 150lb of dog food. My trailer is equiped with the brakes and they do work well. |
How about a surge-type brake for the trailer? They are used for large trailers on ball hitches. The weight of the trailer pushes forward, which applies the brakes.

Thats how the brakes work on the Cycletote
