Need help with a fender (PICS)
 

Hello

I´m trying to mount some SKS Chromoplastic fenders on my commuter (hybrid, 700c wheels). The front one is already in place, but things ain´t looking so bright for its rear brother...

Two main problems:
1 The FD is protruding to the rear, thus needing the fender to be offsetted from the chainstay bridge with a cork or something to the rear

2 But... when I remove the wheel, the wheel has to be able to go a bit forward (due to the dropouts) and I am not sure that space is available..

So Im I right when I think that I dont have any clearance for fenders? or is there a workaround?

It looks pretty tight. One alternative might be to get some slightly shorter fenders like the ones on my hybrid.

You can create all the space you need for removal, by letting the air out of the tire/tube.

Can you reverse the cable attachment on the DR to get more clearance? Clamping on the other side of the bracket/attachment point.

As for mounting, use a smooth, flat head machine screw on the inside of the fender, putting the nut on the outside, on the chainstay/seatstay bridges. Backwards, but it will work.

It does look tight--could you post a drive side picture of your bb, rear wheel, and seat tube?

The SKS should have come with a 'clamp-on (to the fender)' support for use near the seatstay. If you can't fit the fender between the FD and wheel, you could trim the fender similar to the photo Doohickie posted. The clamp-on support should hold the fender okay without the mount at the chainstay bridge.

I have fenders on my bike...with 32s I have to completely deflate the tire to clear the fender at that point when removing the wheel, even with 28s I have to let some pressure out. I don't consider this a problem as nearly the only time I remove the back wheel is when there is a flat.

Have you considered smaller tires? This would open up some space. If you want to bolt to the chain bridge, but don't have clearance, try a zip tie. The fenders are plastic and won't rattle. As for the FD, just cut out a small portion of the fender to make the clearance.

@bicycleflyer: Im having problem with clearance in the radial direction, not the lateral. 37, 32 and 28 have different width but the same outer radius????

Bigger tires are usually bigger all around. Fenders do restrict the tire sizes you can use.
