A typical good wheelbuilder will take around an hour to build a wheel from start to finish. Many claim they can do it in half that. I believe them if it's somebody who builds lots of wheels. I asked Sheldon Brown once and he estimated his personal wheel building time at 45 minutes. Bottom line, $50.00 is a fair per hour price for something that not everybody can do. Folks who charge less are probably doing it partly because it's something lots of bike mechanics like to do and don't get as many opportunities as they'd like.

One of the oddities of the bicycle business is that it costs more to buy the component parts to build a wheel than it costs to buy the same wheel pre-built. Paying to have new rims laced onto your existing hubs is likely to cost more than buying a brand new pre-built wheelset.
