Headset does not fit...pls help

Hi all. First time posting here.

I have a new frame which has a 1” threadless head tube. I would like use my existing fork which has a threaded stem. I bought a 1” Dynatron threaded headset on ebay but when I tried to fit the upper and lower head races on the head tube, they would not fit. The upper and lower races are too small.

Which particular threaded headset should I buy then?

Thank you for any help.

Regards.

There is no such thing as a threadless headtube; the headset you need is determined by the steering tube on your fork.

1" should work in all applications; if the races in your HS will not fit a 1" headtube the HS is probably a mismarked 1-1/8".

Buy a 1" threadless fork or a frame for 1" threaded fork.

Ok, I see. Thanks for the heads up rmfnla. It's just that I don't see any threads inside the head tube of my frame.

I also meant the races were too small that they would not fit or slip into the headtube. Come to think of it, both the races and the headtube lip have the same diameter.

OK, that helps.

I think you mean the races are too big to fit into the head tube. They are a press fit which requires special tools that your LBS (Local Bike Shop) will have.

They will probably charge about $10 to install the cups and it is money well spent.

I assume by races you mean cups, and the cups you got are the wrong size. Probably mislabelled. Measure the inner diameter of your headtube, and get a headset that contains that size outer diameter of the cups. If it were me, I would bring the frame to my lbs and have them size the headset and press the cups- last 1" threaded headset I bought was @10.00, pressing the cups can cost as little as a six-pack.

First, get a set of these so you can come up with some quantitative numbers to post here:

Then go to this Park Tool site on headset standards and see what you've got (refer to measurements at the bottom).

Thanks guys for all your inputs.

Using a digital caliper, the measurement I got for the headtube I.D. is 29.8mm while the headset upper and lower cup O.D. is 32.8mm. So the cups are too big for the headtube.

I went to a couple of local bike store, unfortunately they did not have the headsets in stock. Do you have a suggestion which online vendor would carry the appropriate headset then?

Thank you.

Regards.

According to Danno's PT link and your head tube ID measurement, any 1" threadless headset should work to a press fit.

Good luck.

Happy New Year.

This is an old BMX headset size. Strange that you would be able to purchase something like that without specifically asking for "old BMX". More standard road-bike size is 30.0mm to press-fit into a 29.8mm head-tube.

You can get a new headset pretty much anywhere that'll fit. Just make sure it's for "road bike". Good luck.
