I'm a sick, sick man

I just ordered parts to give my bike a present. Black Chris King front hub and a Mavic Open Pro rim. The only logic is so it'll match my newly built rear wheel. I've got Obcessive compulsive Bicycle Tinkerers Disorder.

Anybody want to buy a perfectly good, lightly used, hand built, Ultegra/Open Pro wheelset?

Maybe you better hang on to that wheelset until you decide if you can tolerate the noise your CK rear hub will subject you to compared to the nearly silent Ultegra.

Retro,

The OCBTD Virus is at an epidemic level around here as well. The fact that I found your reasoning total lucid and logical confirms that I have succumbed do it as well. Those are great spare wheels. I have a set just like them on my road ride. I've heard great things about the CK hubs except for the "agree fleet of bees" sound that they make - but that can just encourage you to keep pedaling. I am going to replace my MTB headset with a CK this season. Good stuff! I hope you don't find a cure.

I will admit to a bit of obessesiveness about color coordinating as well.

I'm personally not a fan of black rims with silver spokes and hubs but I mistakenly ended up with a set of wheels just like that (ordered from Performance and made the assumption that the hub/spokes would be black). But when I built my new commuter, I wanted to use the rear wheel (Ultegra/Open Pro) but needed a new front wheel with a disc hub. I really would have liked to have built an all black wheel (then eventually built a matching rear) but I couldn't stand the thought of cycling possibly several thousand miles with mismatched wheels. So I built another black Open Pro rim with a silver XT disc hub and silver spokes.

The only upside is getting to build an even better set of all black wheels when I eventually decide to upgrade.

They only buzz when you coast. I didn't found the noise to be unsettling during my tune up test ride but I haven't really ridden any distance with the CK rear hub yet.

It's really not so bad. In the end you have a really nice ride that you can maintain perfectly. That's a big win. It's just one of lifes unavoidable expenses, all pursuing a hobby that takes weight off you. bk

Absolutely right that the wheels must match.

Fixies with mismatched wheels really put me on edge. https://www.flickr.com/photos/kizmkk/2243735883/

If the only difference between F and R wheels is the size, that's OK. Go figure.

Fortunately for me, I have staved off the onset of OCBTD. Or else I would have to drop out of college.

Not matching wheels is like not matching brake levers, or mixing Campy and Shimano! Although, sometimes I think it works for a utilitarian style bike...

CK rear hubs have an aluminum freehub body, unless you special order the steel version, which will get chewed up by the loose cogs. Shimano uses titanium for the freehub on their high end hubs to hedge against this wear. People and their weight obsession crack me up - low weight at the expense of durability.

Dura Ace 9-speed (7700 series) hubs did use a Ti freehub body which is very durable and resistant to cog damage. I've got a set with almost 50,000 miles on them and the hubs are still like new.

For their first 10-speed Dura Ace hubs (7800) Shimano did use an Al freehub body which required taller splines and limited them to 10-speed only use. Now, with the newest Dura Ace hubs (7900) Shimano has gone back to the Ti freehub body and they are again 8/9/10-speed compatible.

That's right, how much cash would one need to lay out to enable this sickness?

Well, I didn't pay any attention to what it's made out of but how durable does it have to be? The rear hub that I got came from my son who has used it for around 10 years on one of his mountain bikes. All of the splines were still in visually good condition when I installed the cassette.

Actually, if you knew me, you would know that I'm old and fat and slow. I only wanted the CK wheelset so the angry bee sound would piss off the guys who can't afford one. You're the first. Congratulations!

^ Make sure to go to aspirvevelotech.com and get the matching CK "angry bee" shirt. Probably can get it elsewhere, but that is where I know it from.

I was tempted but $25.00 for a tee shirt seemed a little steep.

It probably would have cost me even more than that. When I ordered the axle end that I needed to convert the hub from 135mm to 130mm they comped the shipping. I don't know if they would have done that if I'd added the tee shirt.
