Help Attaching Rack to Brake Mount

I'm installing a rear rack that attaches to the brake mount.
Would I install the attachment in front of or behind the silver part (red arrow) in the picture?

If Behind:
How do I remove the silver part in the picture. I've tried prying it off but it won't loosen at all.

All help is appreciated!

The "silver part" is a spacer and should slip right off. Look around it and see if there is a set screw that has to be loosened first.

As to the rack's bracket, you can install it on either side of the spacer. All you need to do is have the rack adjusted so the top is fairly level and you can bend or position the bracket to achieve that.

I'm not 100% sure of what I'm looking at but it looks to me like you have an old fashioned single pivot, side pull brake and you have unbolted the arms from the front rather than the securing bolt from the rear. I'm guessing that the spacer is actually part of the spindle and you really should put the arms back on the front and then unbolt it from the rear. I would place the bracket between the shaped spacer on the bridge and the central spacer.

Yeah, if the cylinder with the red arrow is fixed to the brake stud, I would remove the whole thing by loosening the fastener on the forward side of the brake stay; it will likely require an Allen wrench. Put the rack bracket between the cylinder with the red arrow and the frame adapter that's next to it in the picture.

Depends. On some bikes that's a recessed fastener; there's nothing to attach it to.

Thats strange
The frame looks quite modern. But it has old style single pivot sidepul calipers
are you going to rebuild the brake. would give you something to hold onto when undoing the fastener that holds it on.
If its an allen bolt thats in the front of there. Its strange it doesnt have a flat spacer on the back of the frame. Just the half moon shaped spacer.

If you are going to use the brake with the carrier. The carrier would have to go where the half moon spacer is. A bit of a pain if you have the Allen bolt on the spindle. Also the cable might be near the carrier. Will be a pain to set the brake up. Trying to get your hands near it.

If your just using that spindle as a bolt.
You can change it for a 6mm diameter metric threaded bolt from a hardware store.
