Nexus/Alfine Bar End Shifter Available

I have no affiliation with this company or product. Merely informing people of it's availability.

There is now a bar end shifter for drop bars designed for the Shimano Nexus and Alfine 8 speed gear hubs. Per the write up it is designed to fit over the end of the bar so it should fit any wall thickness road diameter bar.

That will make geared hubs much more attractive to the masses. Thanks for the heads up.

Is this the New Golden Age of IGHs?

Eighty bucks for a shifter? It's really not too bad compared to shifters for derailleur bikes.

The shifter is being made in a relatively small shop in the U.S. and I suspect in relatively small quantities. Basically aimed at those relatively few individuals who want a drop bar gear hub bike. A limited market. Not being made in Zillions quantity in China or Taiwan which would allow cheaper pricing.

I am just finishing up installing a SRAM P5 gear hub wheel on a Duracycle. The Duracycle is a Japanese lugged steel frame with road geometry and track style dropouts. I made my own Hubbub style adapter for the rotary shifter mounting on drop bars.

I certainly agree. It's in the price range of bar-end shifter sets for derailleur bikes and is much cheaper than brifters.

Jtek has a knack for filling in the needs that other manufacturers create but don't service. I wonder if they can come up with something similar for the Rohloff hubs.

I have asked them to look into that. Two problems I can see. The Rohloff uses a dual cable pull-pull arrangement for shifting and the shifter needs to move a LOT of cable. Per the Rohloff manual total cable pull from low to high is about 96mm or about 3.8".

When you take into account the price of one of those bar extensions like Harris sells added to the price of the fugly shifter to go on it, eighty bucks for a much better-looking, cleaner-looking option is not that bad. Bad news for my wallet. Thanks for the heads up!

How so? Considering that a bar end shifter for the Shimano Nexus needs to move about twice as much cable as a derailleur shifter does for shifting from low to high I feel they did a good job.

The only design decision I question is the choice of having it install over the end of the bar rather than using a internal expansion plug like most bar end shifters do. A version to fit down tube shifter braze-ons would also be nice.
