Q about swapping chainrings

I have a IRO Mark V fixie running a 46x14 giving me a 88.7 gear/inch

I would like to swap out the front chainring for a 42 and the cog for an 16 giving me a much more respectable 70.9

what do i need to know when switching out the chainring and cog?

IRO's website says the front is 130cd, 46t, 110mm sq bb, 42mm chain
rear cog is 3/32"

would this work for the front?

Is a 42 to small you think?

I'm new to this whole gearing thing, so any help and insight would be appriciated.

I rode a 42X16 for quite sometime. The only issue I had was when I moved to Athens Georgia and was commuting across town to work; going downhill was a ***** as I didn't have a brake hooked up on my fixie...at least not until I swapped out to 1speed freewheel. 42X16 is a good all around gear for rolling terrain.

Regarding the item in the link...it will not work as your rear cog, chain, and front ring need to be the same size. Your post states your rear cog is 3/32" which is standard road bike dimensions, the chainring in your link is 1/2X1/8 and is not compatable.

Any "standard" road chainring with 130BCD should work though.

cool, i will look into that.

yea, the gearing i have now was good for tooling around nantucket (highest part of the island was 150' about sea level), not so good for use around here. From what I have read 71" should be a good starting point for me...

I'll look into reg road chainrings, thanks
