SRAM powerlink disconnect

OK, I've done the search function and still no info. So I submit to the experts.

I have SRAM chain with the power link and can't get it to release. What is the trick? Do I need a special tool?

I am changing the crank set and need the almost new chain off. I don't want to cut the chain if possible since I hope to put it on a cross bike that doesn't get many miles. I have used the KMC chains before and was able to remove the link fairly easy.

9 speed? Just bend the link back like you are trying to shorten the chain and grasp both sides and push in opposite directions. Should pop right off. Must less resistance than a KMC.

powerLOCK, 10 speed,

or powerLINK, 7,8,9 speed?

Go to SRAM tech docs for the 10 speed removal, I'm not positive but check coz i think you're instructed to press the pin out on the 10 speed link. I'll check at work.

but if you're having difficultly removing the 8 or p speed link, set chain tension in lowest gearing, or remove from crank altogther to slack the chain, this usually makes pressing and pushing the link plates inward a lot easier.

Even the powerloc 10 can be unhooked, but you need a pair of special pliers to do it. Park sells them or you can make your own from a cheap pair of needle nose pliers. The rollers must be squeezed together with a substantial force.

It's a 10 speed chain. I even tried to take a piece of wire and loop it around the rollers then twist the wire ends using linesman pliers. I may take an old pair of needle nosed pliers and grind down the ends. It didn't occur to me to check the SRAM website.

Thanks for all the advice.

The Park tool for that is really the best way; it's fast and easy. I didn't have it the first time I had to disconnect one, so I just used coathanger wire, slipped it in there and twisted. Popped it right apart.

You can fix anything with duct tape and coathangers. The advantage, in this case, is that the coathanger wire is pretty strong so it was able to compress enough.

The trick is that you have to squeeze inward on the master link while you're bringing the pins toward each other. That little bit of inward force unlocks it.

Even on 8 and 9 speed sram chain (not just 10) the thing can get jammed up. Use a needle nose to squeeze 2 pins inward, then it will come apart. It's a good idea to replace this link, since it will probably continue to be difficult to remove.

Happens about 1 in every 3 chains in my experience, not a big deal.
