converting to a compact
My son would like to convert his triple to a compact and I would likee to know what all is needed to do this . Will I need a new front derailleur and will I need to change the brake/shifter ? Also is anything else needed ?

What bike and which components, including # of cogs in back? There is no universal yes or no answer.

Depends, but at the very least you'll need a new crankset and at the very most you'll need a new crankset and bottom bracket.
Other adjustments would include adjusting the front derailuer height and trim screws.

If it's a triple, there is a pretty good chance it's a 110/74, in that case all you would really need to do is remove the inner ring and swap out the old middle and outer rings. You can lock out the inner position of the front derailer using the limit stops and just live with the extra click in the shifter.
