Switching from Uniglide to Hyperglide
 

I'm switching my Dura-Ace 7sp Uniglide hub to a 7sp Hyperglide hub. I bought a complete Dura-Ace rear hub, so how do I get the cassette hub off the wheel hub? I've got the cone wrench and I've removed that, I now need to get the casette hub off. Also I think I need a spacer to put on the cassette of the 7sp cog. When I put the 11 tooth cog and the lock ring on the 11 tooth is loose. Would I need to put a spacer on the opposite side also to even things out? I went to Sheldons site but it wasn't to clear for me.

If what I understand from what you wrote is correct, it can't be done.

If you want to remove your Uniglide freehub body and transplant it on a new (non Dura-Ace 7 or 8 speed) hub. Or if you want to take a new (non Dura-Ace 7 or 8 speed) Hyperglide (speed doesn't matter) and put it on your old hub, this cannont happen.

Much of Dura-Ace 7 and 8 speed doesn't work with other groups. One thing that doesn't is the freehub body. The freehub mechanism/ hub inteface is different from all other years, and the Uniglide outer cog/ lockring has a different threading than all other models.

I may have read your post incorrectly, so tell me if I'm wrong. If I am, it might be possible.

I'm sorry I was in a hurry writing that. I have two dura-ace hubs. one uniglide built up onto mavic rims, and one hyperglide hub only (not built up with rims). How do I take the hyperglide freewheel hub off of the wheel hub? Then swap the hyperglide onto the uniglide equiped hub. I hope that sounds right.

The Dura-Ace Uniglide hub can only accept the Dura-Ace 8-speed HyperGlide freehub (7403). It will not accept the freehub from the 9- or 10-speed hubs (7700 or 7800). If you have the 8-speed hub, you need a special tool to remove and install the freehub. See http://sheldonbrown.com/harris/k7.html#bodies

A new Dura-Ace hub will be 10 speed. An 8-9-10 speed freehub is longer than a 7 speed. You can put a 7 speed cassette on an 8-9-10 speed freehub body, you need a 4mm spacer behind the cassette. However, if your frame has 126mm OLD, then a 10 speed freehub body will make your hub too wide, 130mm. You could juggle spacers to get back to 126mm but the dish on such a wheel will be excessive. This all assumes that the Uniglide freehub has the same mounting as current Hyperglide freehub. With early Dura-Ace, that's not a good bet.
I don't think there's an easy solution to this one.

GGggrrrrr you guys are right. I tried to put that hub in my drop outs and it will not fit. I thought I measured it first but I guess I was wrong. It will not fit in the 126mm dropouts on my bike. I guess I can grind off the wide spline so it will fit on the uniglide hub.

Not that tough to spread the dropouts 2mm per side to install that hub. I did that all the time when DA went to 8-spd.
