Newer Campy Brifters w/ Late 70s NR Derailers?

Anyone think this would work? I have this crazy idea to get some campy brifters and use them with my late 70s NR drive train, of course replacing the hub set to accept a new campy cassette. I guess my main questions are:

Do different derailers have different actuation?
Would a 9 or 10 speed chain be compatible with the old 12 speed rings?
Would Campy brifters shift a earlier NR derailer across 9 or 10 cogs and index properly?

I searched for a while but didn't come up with anything like this. From what I've assembled I'm my head, its possible to use any indexed shift lever/derailer combo whether it be a Shimano or Campy derailer so long as you use have correct spacing for the freewheel? Is this misinformation? I'm not really interested in using a shiftmate. Thanks!

probably isn't going to work. The rear dérailleur has to move a given amount for a certain amount of cable travel. The newer dérailleurs take more cable travel for each gear. I did the opposite of what you want to do, record DT shifters with a modern rear derailleur. My rear lever is almost out of travel. The newer slant parallelogram rear derailleurs blow away an old NR.

So I'm correct in thinking that different derailers have different movements with the same amount of cable pull?
