Fork wobbles...
Hello,
My fork wobbles... see picture.... it wobbles at the #3. I'm curious how to fix this. From what I have read, I have to loosen the headset at #2 and tighten the screw at #1. Is this correct? Cheers, Jason http://people.msoe.edu/~capriotj/fork.jpg |
there's actually two screws at 2 and yes, this is the one you want to tighten to keep the fork from wobbling.
the bottom one to tighten, the top one to keep the bottom one from untightening. the screw at 1 is to make the bars rotate with the fork. there's also the right amount of tightening, enough to keep the fork from wobbling, but not too much so the fork doesn't steer at all. |
You need a special wrench to adjuct the bottom nut at 2 (headset wrench). It is something like 32 mm and is fairly thin. Loosen the top nut at 2, tighten the bottom nut at 2 to remove wobble. Then holding bottom nut in that position with above wrench, tighten top nut against bottom nut. Check that steering can turn freely without wobbling - if it isnt start again to readjust.

Here's what you need to do:

a 10in" adjustable will work for the top, locknut if it's 32mm, combine it with a headset wrench and you are set.

And, to be clear, #1 has absolutely nothing to do with adjusting the amount of play in the headset.
