Trek Warranty
I have a 2006 upper end Trek that came with the compact Bontrager Race-x carbon crankarms. I noticed some wobble & wear on the contact surface between the crank & the outboard bearing cups.
The shop sent the crank arms in on a warranty claim and Trek sent back a compact Shimano Ultegra SL crank set as a replacement.
Should I have gotten Bontragers back or did I end up on the better end of the exchange?

Yea, so far I am very happy. The quality of construction is way above the Bonty's. Now I am inspired to get those nice ultegra sl pedals to match. Mabye it's time to leave the SPD's, get out of the mtb shoes and get proper road footwear.

Bontrager has discontinued manufacturing cranksets, so they probably didn't have an exaxt replacement for you.

From what I've seen, Trek does stand behind their stuff very well. I've got a friend who had a Trek hardtail XC mountain bike from the '90's. Abused the heck out of it; used it for big jumps, drops, etc, before "freeriding" was popular. Broke the frame. Everyone knew it was from abuse, including the LBS where he bought the bike. He didn't really expect anything in terms of warranty, but showed the bike to the LBS. They sent it off, Trek sent a new upgraded frame within a week, no questions asked. That was several years ago, and he's still riding the replacement frame.

The only trick to Trek's (or Litespeed's or many other makers) warranty is you have to be able to show you are the original owner as the warranty isn't transferable. So keep your sales receipt and register the bike with Trek when you get it and file away the paper work where you can find it.
If you buy used, the original owner could file a warranty claim under his or her name if they are willing to help you out.
