Are these components compatible?
I just ordered the DA 7900 rear derailleur. I would like to install the 7900 series chain, but I read on a few websites that the 7900 chain in not compatible with older Shimano components. Has anyone installed the new 7900 chain with older Shimano components?
I have a SRAM Force Compact Crank, Ultegra SL front derailleur, and Ultegra Cassette
Thanks

I did some quick searching and it seems Shimano does say the 7900 series chain is incompatible with older groups, including the 7800 series. The mis-match isn't with the 7800 rear derailleur but with the 7800 chainrings and cassettes.
Now, Shimano (and Campy) are notorious for claiming you have to use their entire groups together but experience often says you can mix-and-match at will.
However, the 7900 chains are expensive and offer no advantage when used with older cranks and cassettes so you might as well use a more compatible, and less expensive, chain. The master link provided with the 7900 series chains will fit any other Shimano 10-speed chain so that isn't a problem if you want to use the 7900 chain just to get the master link.

Ok, thanks for the response. Looks like I will purchase the 7800 chain just to be safe.
