I took my broken chain to my LBS. He did seem suppressed & said it happens occasionally regardless of the make. It could have been a manufacturing defect or damage from a jam or a difficult shift (my paraphrase). He gave me a few spare links to replace the one that broke.

I guess the answer is that any chain could give out any time (like us humans).
