replacing Campy8 with Shi.10- can mix?

Got a new/old bike, Record 8-sp. Want to upgrade to 10-sp for higher and lower gear, and already have Ultegra shifters and 11-28 sram cassette on Neuvation wheels. Shi. site says only DA can handle 28t rear. Do I need the DA or will a 105 or Ult work, could I use a Force rear with Ultegra shifters? Will I have to change Record front der.? Rebuilding is tough!

If you want to convert to 10-speed Shimano, and do it right, you'll need Shimano 10-sp shifters, derailleurs, chain, and the rear hub needs to be Shimano 8, 9, 10 compatible. Shimano shifters are not compatible with Campy or SRAM derailleurs due to differences in throw ratios. Your 10-speed SRAM cassette should be compatible with Shimano shifters and any Shimano derailleurs except pre-nine speed D-A. Any Shimano derailleur will work with a 28t big cog but with an 11-28 you'll need to check derailleur chain wrap capacity, depending on the size of your chainrings. If the crankset is a triple you'll need a long cage road or mtn type rear derailleur. And with an 11 small cog you'll need the special 11 cog lockring.
It may be possible to mix Shimano with Campy by using a J-Tek shift mate or a custom built cassette, but it is much to not mix brands. When setting up a drivetrain you need to consider all compatibility issues including cable pull, throw ratios, chain wrap, cog size limit, derailleur adjustment limits, front and rear, and rear hub spline pattern and size limit.

Hey Al, thanks for all the good advice. Can't say I'm up to speed on throw ratios! Do have the lockring- came with cassette. Just got Ultegra rear der so only missing front der and chain, but coming soon! Have a standard front double (53), and the new rear is a med/long cage, so think that should fit? Hope to mount everything and let lbs tighten and trim since I don't have tools. Any other thoughts?
