Cross Check Triple???

so im getting a cross check to do some light touring. Id like to throw a triple on there, as the crank is all set for it, just need the small chainring. my question is, is this really all that I need to do? Do i need to replace the front deraileur? cables? has anyone done this? -thanks

Are you saying the bike already has a triple crankset but is missing the small ring? If so, then yes, I think all you'll need to do is put the ring on there, and probably adjust the front derailleur.

If the bike has a double crankset, it's much more complicated than that.

Depends.

As a general rule you can never change just one part on a bike because everything works together. Potentially you may need to replace your bottom bracket and both derailleurs. Then again, you may not.

I just did this for a customer.

The cross Check complete comes with a triple crank with the small ring removed. However, the BB is a 107, so you'll need to get a longer one. I think we put in a 118 in there (though probably ok with a 115. The small ring is a 74bcd 5 bolt.

As for the FD, if you are using the stock friction shifter, you can get away with keeping the stock double derailleur. If you have STI, then you'll probably want to get a Triple FD.

I doubt you'll ever see a ramped or pinned granny gear. The BB would be 68
